What you get
Divcord can be installed like an app without an app store. After you allow notifications in Settings, rooms you opt into can ping you even when the browser or tab is closed.
- Standalone window (no browser ui) after install.
- Home screen / app launcher icon.
- Push notifs for rooms you opted into, even when the app is closed.
Install the app
Open a server you actually use (e.g.
my-server.divcord.gg). Install from that address.
Each server behaves as its own app.
Chrome, Edge, or Chromium on desktop
- Open the chat over HTTPS.
- Look for the install icon in the address bar, or open the browser menu.
- Choose Install Divcord / Install page as app.
- Confirm. The app opens in its own window.
Chrome on Android
- Open the chat in Chrome.
- Menu (three dots) → Add to Home screen or Install app.
- Confirm. Launch it from the home screen like any other app.
Safari on iPhone or iPad
- Open the chat in Safari (not an in-app browser).
- Tap Share & Add to Home Screen.
- Open the icon from the home screen. iPhone and iPad only deliver push from that installed icon, not from a regular Safari tab.
Firefox and other browsers vary. If there is no install prompt, you can still use the site in a normal tab and turn on notifications there if the browser allows them.
Enable notifications
You do not have to install the app to get desktop notifications. You do have to allow the browser prompt and turn the setting on. However, this will not reliably notify you when the browser is closed.
- Sign in on the server.
- Open Settings (gear).
- Check Enable browser push notifications and save.
- Allow notifications when the browser asks. If the app reloads, sign in, check the box, and save again.
After that, this browser is subscribed on that server. Uncheck the same box later to unsubscribe. If the box already says push is enabled, leave it checked to keep it.
If the site is blocked:
- Chrome / Edge: lock or tune icon in the address bar → Notifications → Allow, then reload.
- Firefox: lock icon → Permissions → Notifications → Allow, then reload.
- iOS: allow notifications when the installed app first asks. Site settings live under iOS Settings for that app.
Per-room modes
Push is not a single on/off for every room. Settings exposes a mode for the room you are currently in.
| Mode | What you get |
|---|---|
all · All messages |
Every new message in that room, except your own. |
mentions · Only mentions |
Messages that @mention your username. Default for public rooms. |
none · No messages |
Nothing from that room, even if you still have push enabled globally. |
Change the dropdown labeled Notifications for #room, save, and the choice is stored on that server for your account. It applies to both Web Push and the in-tab sound.
Defaults and rooms you have visited
You do not have to configure every room by hand. The first time you join a public room on a server, that room is put on the default mode: Only mentions. Private messages default to All messages, including a notice when someone starts a new private message with you.
- Public rooms you have visited on that server start notifying at Only mentions.
- Private message threads default to All messages, even before you open the thread.
- Rooms you have never joined stay off. Visiting is what opts a public room in.
- If you later pick All messages or No messages, that explicit choice replaces the default for that room only.
- Your own messages never notify you.
Mentions are username pings of the form @you, not loose text that happens
to contain your name.
Scoped to servers
Accounts, rooms, push subscriptions, and notification settings are isolated to each server.
| Thing | Scope |
|---|---|
| Room notification mode | This account, this room, this server. |
| Default after a visit | Only rooms you joined on that server. |
| Push subscription | This browser, on this server origin. |
| Installed app | The address you installed from. Another server is a different app. |
Enabling push on one server does not turn it on for another. Visiting #general
on server A does not default notifications for #general on server B.
If you use more than one server, install or subscribe on each host you care about.
While the tab is open
Even without push permission, an open tab can play a short sound when a message matches that room's mode. The sound is skipped while you are looking at that exact room, because you can already see the line. If the tab is in the background and the browser already allowed notifications, a system banner may appear as well.
Browsers block sound until you click or type once. After the first gesture, later alerts can play.
Troubleshooting
| Symptom | What to check |
|---|---|
| No install prompt | Use https, Chrome / Edge / Safari Add to Home Screen, and open the chat itself rather than a page that only embeds it. |
| Settings says push needs HTTPS | Open the public https address for that server, not a plain http link. |
| Permission denied | Allow notifications in site settings, reload, then check the Settings box again. |
| Push not configured | That server has not turned on push. The in-tab sound can still work. |
| Alerts from the wrong rooms | Open each room and set its mode. Prefs do not copy across servers. |
| Nothing after leaving a room | You still get alerts for rooms you visited unless that room is set to No messages and this browser still has notifications on for that server. |
| iOS never prompts | Add to Home Screen and open the icon. Push from a Safari tab alone is limited. |
